Last summer we did not know if our baby Owen would survive. Within a matter of days, Owen had gone from being a happy, energetic 6-month old to a lethargic, sick baby. When he arrived at Children's, he was evaluated in the ER then sent to the PICU to determine what was going on. He rapidly deteriorated into multi-organ failure. Many specialists saw and cared for Owen. Although the cause of his illness is ultimately unknown, the amazing providers at Children's were able to treat him and after a long journey (five weeks in the PICU and two months total at Children's) Owen returned home. It continues to be a medical journey as he faces challenges with his leg and foot. However, Owen's name means "Little Warrior" and he is aptly named! Our little guy is a fighter, and is now facing the challenge of learning to walk!
When Owen was in the PICU, two of his nurses participated in the Courage Classic. I knew then that if Owen was in a better place, the following year our family would join the event to support Children's. Well, it has been a year, and Owen has made so much progress! We are celebrating by joining Children's Hospital in raising support for the kids (including Owen) who continue to receive wonderful, heartfelt care from Children's. We are forever grateful to everyone who helped in Owen being WITH US today. It is an extra bonus that he is healthy and able to participate in this event!
We would love to raise $1,000 for Children's Hospital. Daniel, Owen and I will ride the "family route" which is 10 miles one day and 23 miles the next day. Owen will be in the bike trailer! Gabriella will be cheering us along. The ride starts at Copper Mountain and we only have mountain bikes so it will be challenging!
