I ride to give hope and support to Children’s Hospital Colorado patients with celiac disease.
My partner was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2010 while in college. I know firsthand how difficult understanding, navigating, and implementing the gluten-free diet can be because no one told us how to do it and were given simple handouts and the recommendation to eat gluten-free for the rest of his life. His diagnosis empowered me to a better clinician for the future of others and to be a registered dietitian who specializes in celiac disease and the gluten-free diet because this is one of the hardest diets to navigate if you do not live and breathe it!
I am so thankful that here at the Colorado Center for Celiac Disease we have a fantastic multidisciplinary team to support our patients. Every patient deserves expertise to make their transition to a lifelong strict gluten-free diet a little less challenging. Unfortunately, many insurance companies do not cover the cost of gluten-free diet education and registered dietitian assessments in celiac disease despite the gluten-free diet being the only treatment for celiac. Many families are then faced with the decision to either pay out of pocket or not get any education at all.
Our Courage Classic team, the Wheatless Warriors, is raising money to provide scholarships for all families to be able to get our comprehensive gluten-free diet education at diagnosis, even when insurance does not cover this.
In addition, the cost of gluten-free products is extremely expensive, on average 2-3x more expensive than the regular, gluten-containing versions of products. The financial burden of celiac disease is very large and a strain for many families. We will also use the money that we raise to help support families in need with the cost of gluten-free food through organizations such as the Food Equality Initiative.
Thank you for helping me support our patients with celiac disease at Children's Hospital Colorado!
