I ride to give hope and support to Children's Hospital Colorado patients with celiac disease.
I was diagnosed with celiac disease myself in 2003, so from following the gluten-free diet over the past 18 years I know how challenging that can be. The first months after diagnosis when trying to start the gluten-free diet can feel very overwhelming and isolating. I am so thankful that here at the Colorado Center for Celiac Disease we have a fantastic multidisciplinary team to support our patients including dietitians, a psychologist, doctors, and nurses. Every patient deserves this help to make their transition to a lifelong strict gluten-free diet a little less challenging. But unfortunately many insurance companies do not pay for celiac disease patients to see a dietitian, so many families are faced with the decision to try to pay for gluten-free diet education out of their own pocket or not get the education. Our Courage Classic team, the Wheatless Warriors, is raising money to provide scholarships for all families to be able to get our comprehensive gluten-free diet education at diagnosis, even when insurance does not cover this.
In addition, the cost of gluten-free products is extremely expensive, on average 2-3x more expensive than the regular, gluten-containing versions of products. The financial burden of celiac disease is very large and a big strain for many families. We will also use the money that we raise to help support families in need with the cost of gluten-free food through organizations such as the Food Equality Initiative.
Thank you for helping me support our patients with celiac disease at Children's Hospital Colorado!
