Dear Friends and Family,
As many of you know, I underwent open heart surgery in May of 2020. My surgery was performed at Children's Hospital Colorado in Denver. At 55 years old I was one of the oldest patients there at the time. On the floor I spent my days of recovery there was another patient the same age as me. The surgery is typically done on infants and the very young as the defect is most often detected at birth.
I had a congenital (present at birth) heart defect corrected called Partially Anomylous Pulmonary Vein Return. I had lived with the condition all my life but it had just recently caught up with me and was beginning to cause me problems. The surgery is very complex and only certain surgeons and hospitals are able to perform it. I have had great success in my recovery and today am healthier feeling than I have been in years.
While at CHCO I met several other heart patients also recovering. They ranged in age from just a few months to six years old. I was touched by each and every one of their stories. And while witnessing their pain and sufering from thier conditions and treatments was heartbreaking, it was comforting to know that they were receiving some of the best care available anywhere. Only through the work of CHCO would some of these children have the opportunity for a healthy happy life. The work being done at CHCO is amazing and gives so many children and their families hope for healthy happy lives.
The doctors and staff on my team at Childrens found out that i was an avid bike rider and asked me if I would be willing to ride the Courage Classis in 2021 to help raise money for Children's Hospital Colorado. Considering my experience and seeing the amazing positive impact CHCO has on the families they serve, I accepted with no hesitation.
This endeavor will be the most physically daunting pursuit in my life but I feel honored to have the opportunity to support positive outcomes and healthier futures for children.
Please join me in supporting CHCO by sponsoring me in the Courage Classic!
