Sally Rae was diagnosed with Critical Aortic Stenosis at 20 weeks of pregnancy, and just a couple weeks later, she had her first procedure done, in utero at Boston Children's.
Because the procedure was unsuccessful, it did not look as though Sally Rae would make it. She fought hard to make it to her birth, and she received her first open heart surgery, the Norwood, when she was only one week old, at Children’s Hospital Colorado. After she spent the next two months recovering in the Children's Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), she was finally ready to go home.
At five months old she had her second open heart surgery, the Glenn, and now she is working on growing, developing, and having lots of baby fun!
She really enjoys chewing on all her toys, eating bananas, and watching football! She is becoming such a sassy and talkative little girl.
Sally Rae truly is a little miracle, and she is the reason I ride for Children's Hospital Colorado this year as #1334. My team, the Cardiac Climbers, rides to help raise money for the Heart Institute at Children's Hospital Colorado. All the money we raise goes directly back to the HI for equipment, support and education. Over the past 14 years we have raised over $1.3 million dollars!
