This year I ride to celebrate 13 years of caring for kids with heart transplants. These patients and their families are inspiring! Their courage and strength inspire each day. I have cried and laughed with these patients and their families. I have known some of them before they were even born. I have watched them grow from fragile newborns to toddlers taking their first steps. Some I have met a bit older, sick with heart disease and feeling terrible for years to blossom after transplant into vibrant, healthy children. I have had the pleasure of seeing many of them graduate from high school and even transition to the adult program. And yes, I have had to support some families when even transplant couldn't help their child any longer. Now as a parent myself, I understand even more the pain a parent feels when their child hurts or can't tell them what's wrong. I feel the joy and immense pride a parent shares when their child does something for the first time or just looks at you with loving eyes. I savor each moment, each snuggle, even each tantrum because I know life is not guaranteed, time is precious. So this year my husband and I will ride, he pulling our 2 children and remember that when I am challenged to go farther to reach the summit, that it is nothing compared to my patients and their families challenges. So please support me in raising money for the Heart Institute and it's staff to continue caring for heart transplant patients.
