This year, I am riding in honor of Addison Arnold, an eleven year old with an inspiring story of overcoming. Addie has been a patient at ten different clinics at Children’s Hospital Colorado, including the Sie Center for Down Syndrome. Like many of her peers with Down syndrome, Addie was born with congenital heart defects and severe pulmonary hypertension, and endured two surgeries before her first birthday. When Addie was just four years old, she was diagnosed with leukemia, and the week of her fifth birthday, she suffered a stroke due to a rare condition known as Moyamoya. Addie survived nearly two and a half years of intensive chemotherapy and reconstructive brain surgery along her path to healing.
The doctors at the Anna and John J. Sie Center for Down Syndrome were a vital part of Addie’s care – and survival – helping coordinate and streamline the treatments needed to help overcome her various life threatening conditions. Thanks to Children’s Hospital Colorado and clinics like the Sie Center for Down Syndrome, Addie is a thriving young lady, enjoying school, time with her twin brother and other friends, and participating in camps like Dare to Play Tennis through the Global Down Syndrome Foundation.
