I am participating in the Courage Classic to support children like Ava and Austin.
Ava and Austin were both diagnosed at birth with a rare metabolic disorder called PKU. PKU is caused by a defect in the enzyme that breaks down Phenylalanine, an amino acid in protein; and therefore, must maintain a strict diet low in protein. If PKU is not treated, phenylalanine can build up to harmful levels in the body, causing intellectual disability and other serious health problems.
Children's Hospital Colorado helps monitor Ava and Austin's blood levels to ensure they are maintaining a healthy level of phenylalanine.
The Courage Classic is not only a personal challenge, but also an opportunity to support positive outcomes and healthier futures for all children.
