Why I ride
Dear Family and Friends,
How often do we have a chance to be the light? Coming out of a year of darkness, we each have a chance to shine for one another.
I am excited to let you know that I am riding in the Courage Classic bicycle tour benefiting Children's Hospital Colorado again this year. This will be my fifth Courage Classic. Over the past few months I have trained to conquer mountain passes in our beautiful Colorado high country. I hope you will join me... Together, let’s be the light for children and families affected by childhood cancer and blood disorders.
This year is extra special … I am riding with the Wheels of Justice team as in previous years, and my personal goal is to raise $1,800.00 for the children and families who rely on Children's Colorado for care. We are riding to honor the memory of a very special young man whom many of you met, Koby Gruenwald. I first met Koby in 2017 at the Courage Classic. He was riding his Green Machine bike all around Copper with his parents and twin siblings. Koby and his family were there because Koby was battling glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer. Sadly Koby passed away in January of 2018.
One of the important themes in Koby’s life was finding light in the darkness. He and his mom, Melanie, spent time learning together about this concept. Our team jerseys this year will have a phrase reminding us to seek light in the darkness.
Our Wheels of Justice team planned to honor Koby’s memory during last year’s Courage Classic. However, Covid changed that plan. Instead, Koby’s brother, Micah, found light in the darkness of a pandemic and organized the “Tour de Koby” last summer. We rode a total of 65 miles (yes, with masks!) around Denver visiting significant places in Koby’s life including Children’s Hospital and Koby’s school. Micah was a shining light and helped all of us to find light in the darkness.
This year the Koby’s family will join us again at the Courage Classic in Copper Mountain on July 17. It will be a one day ride as we continue to emerge from the pandemic. However, we are very excited to join Micah for the second Tour de Koby in August.
To help you understand why I do this, please take a few minutes and meet Koby and his family at the Courage Classic here.
Whether you are in Colorado or farther away, I am asking for your support because Children's Colorado is near and dear to our family and our community. As I ride the Courage Classic this year, Kathryn will be working as a Pediatric Resident in the PICU at Children's Hospital Colorado. Our family remains strongly committed to this outstanding organization! Children's also provides care for kids from around the country and contributes to the health of children and families nationwide through outstanding research.
I invite you to join me in being the light in the darkness and providing healthier futures for the thousands of kids served every year by Children's Colorado. It is faster and easier than ever to support this great cause by making your tax-deductible donation online. To make an online donation, click on the green Donate button above.
This is for Koby. And Nathan and Fynn and Jared. This is for their families. Join us. Be the light. Thank you.
