We couldn't do it without you!
Team Summits for Samantha started ten years ago. It seemed like the right thing to do as our granddaughter, Samantha, was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disease and was spending a lot of time at Children's and receiving great care. We all wanted to give back. Samantha's Mom and our daughter Heather started a small but mighty team that raised $3,000 the first year.
A lot has happened in those ten years. Samantha passed away eight years ago in July, a week after her fourth birthday. Rather than riding in the Courage Classic that year we gathered for her memorial service. As you can see by her picture, Samantha was a special child, despite her physical challenges. We knew there was more to do in her memory and we wanted to help families dealing with this terrible disease.
Last year we had over 70 members on our team and we continue to be one of the Top Ten Teams. The amount we have raised is significant as we have been able to donate the funds to the Mitochondrial Clinic at Children's. Thanks to our donors the Clinic is able to do mitochondrial research for the Rocky Mountain region in addition to treating children and adults with this disease. Because the disease is rare, Children's is the only hospital in the region that treats the patients and does research.
We have been sponsored by Heather's company Epsilon and their parent company ADS. They have supported our team AND they have made significant contributions to Children's including donations to start the new Multidisciplinary Clinic. Children and adults with many issues like Samantha can receive treatment at one Clinic rather than setting multiple appointments, making it easier for the patient and their family.
Clinical Trials at Children's and our son Ryan
A few years ago our son Ryan was diagnosed with a "latent" mitochondrial disease. Because of all of the funds we have raised Children's qualified for a Phase 3 clinical trial for a promising new drug to treat this disease and Ryan will be part of the trial.
As you can see your donation goes a long way and you can make an impact. We have made an impact because of our donations. Please help support our ride and our efforts to help those who have this terrible disease. Samantha's memory lives on thanks to your generous support to Summits for Samantha!
